reflections of a 20 year old

reflections of a 20 year old. indeed, this marks a significant time period in life.. so it appears. what makes this january 29 different from any other january 29?

1. january 29 2006 is chinese new year. to the chinese, this is a time of family, a time of celebration for the coming new year, and a time of giving and sharing. personally i find the animals stuff and the singing weird songs and the fancy chinese phrases and bit tiresome, repetitive, and a bit heathen. there's always time for giving and sharing, and surely i do not mind receiving red envelops stuffed with cash. but surely still, such a time should not have constant tension and unfamiliarity in the family.

2. for the very first time, age dictates that i am to be an adult. therefore, it is only right to act like an adult, and deal with my own issues as an adult. though i understand that the constant struggles of life is neverending, teenager or adult, i would guess that there certainly should be some expected change. on this january 29, i found that all the more difficult to handle. it may have been the consistent reminders of failure in many facets, spiritual and unspiritual. or the times that the things close to heart were abruptly taken away in pain. or even just the duty to be a responsible person, with a series of responsibilities. 20 is a landmark for maturity, and maturity demands me to deal with things right.

3. the value of love and friendship stands out so much more to me. it was a clear comparison. my first birthday in university, i spent the weekend with very different people, and we ended up doing many different things together. i saw different forms of love in their actions and their words. i appreciated everyone that remembered my birthday, sometimes to the point that i didn't know what to say back, and some did more than that. i'm a believer that we should treat our friends like it's their birthday every day.. except that the birthday gives us a reason to do something extra fun for the person you love. thank you everyone that i encountered that weekend.. you've reminded me how much more that i should love you as a friend and brother in Christ. yup.. yes you.

4. weaknesses are sometimes best left hidden from the cheeky ones. letters should always come with a 50 cent canadian stamp if it is a local letter, and it should also be stamped by the post office to show that it has been mailed. as well, normal people do not make their signatures indecipherable, nor do they spray tommy girl all over it. if the letter contains these traits, and includes lots of mushy writing, be suspicious. be very suspicious. i at least got the suspicious part down.

5. though i am in a new "phase" of life, i'm still stuck in the same phase of life as a student. i'm 20, but school still sucks so hard. the best birthday present for me is a good mark for my exams. (not to say that i didn't like the ones i received. thank you!)

20 years old indeed. that's a lot to think about for a kid like me. i bid all the 19 year olds good luck, all the 20+ year olds good day, and all the 18- good grief charlie brown, cuz u've got a long way to go!

sincerely yours,
victro

mcdougall stories

it's only been two weeks at 94 mcdougall, and derek yau, bily xiao, jon lo and jon chan as well as myself have had some crazy times.

today.. me and derek made the BEAST. it was so BEAST that we couldn't contain it. u don't understand.. it was beast. take a look at this.

not to mention the little mishap with the fried bananas in the company of vanessa. we'll keep that one quiet. haha.

u'd think engineers would be hardcoring the work all day. 30 hour weeks for the 5 of us. early mornings, late nights. but our gamecube would definitely disagree. smash bros melee.. how many hours did we spend on that.. ha-cha! then we go downstairs, the same place where we play, pullin out the textbooks and we hardcore it. beast.

the new christmas lights add a festive feel to the house. warm. cozy. comfortable. the world of an engineer is intense, sometimes hopeless, sometimes overwhelming. but u would walk up those stairs, and feel a sense of hope, and a sense of family, and even a small tinge of love.

thank you all for coming to our mcdougall housewarming party. we had lots of fun, lots of food, and lots of good times.

i love my massive room, becuz i love how inviting it is. though it looks like an office, and the entrance of into the room already makes one feel obliged to act professional, courteous to the boss (me), from my angle, looking out the door, it feels refreshing. another new face coming in. another companion to share in the struggle of university.

the microfibre cloth has brought us through many trials of dirt and grime, and still goes on to. may u keep us in bacteria-free living.

5 computers, 5 guitars, tons of juggling balls, 3 chess sets, networked laser printer hooked up to a 40gb LANed server, CUT CAPO, and four hearts desiring to see Jesus.

Christ, be the center of our lives.. be the place we fix our eyes.
We lift our eyes to heaven.. we wrap our lives around your life.

may the next 3 months be blessed.

names

VICTOR

Gender: Masculine
Usage: English, French, Portuguese, Romanian
Pronounced: VIK-tor (English), veek-TOR (French)
Roman name meaning "winner, conqueror" in Latin. Several early saints and three popes have had this name. Another famous bearer was Victor Hugo, the French author who wrote 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' and 'Les Miserables'.

劉啟耀 (LAU KAI YIU)

劉 (LAU)
the name of a type of weapon used in ancient Chinese times, more commonly meaning, to kill or to destroy

啟耀 (KAI YIU)
direct translation to mean "to reveal or to bring glory". the name was originally intended for the glory to be revealed/brought to my ancestors. funny that we can say it has a more christian meaning to it.

ELESSAR (of Eärendil, the first elfstone)

A fabulous green gem made in Gondolin during the First Age. Stories of its creation differ in detail: some name Enerdhil as its maker, but Celebrimbor son of Curufin was more likely to have been the jewelsmith who created it. The Elessar had the light of the Sun trapped within it, and those who looked through it were said to see the withered or aged as whole and young again. It was even claimed to have some power of healing.

This Elessar was saved from the Fall of Gondolin by Idril, who gave it to her son Eärendil, and with Eärendil it was carried across the Sea to the Blessed Realm. In the Third Age, another Elessar was seen - the Elfstone given by Galadriel to Aragorn - and some said that this was Eärendil's jewel, brought back to Middle-earth by Mithrandir. In truth, though, Aragorn's Elessar seems to have been a new stone, also made by Celebrimbor, with less power than the original jewel.

ELESSAR (of Aragorn)

High title and surname of Aragorn son of Arathorn, meaning "Elfstone". It was long foretold that he would take this name; it was given to him in Lórien by Galadriel. She granted him a gift of a green stone set in a silver brooch in the shape of an eagle as he and the Company of the Ring left her land (on 16 February III 3019). 'In this hour,' she said, 'take the name that was foretold for you, Elessar, the Elfstone of the house of Elendil!'

When Aragorn took up the kingship of Gondor, he assumed the name Elessar, and later references to him take the form 'King Elessar'.

GRAND LETHAL

the final "dyne" attack of Zidane Tribal, main character of Final Fantasy 9 (one i liked a lot). dyne attacks only happen when the character reaches their "trance level", which occurs when the character reaches their limit break. when trance occurs, the character unleashes deadly attacks to the enemy until their trance runs out. Zidane is the leader of the FF9 group, and is a leader of strength, energy and care. his strongest attack represents his final energies to preserve the hope that remains in battle, as well as a strengthening encouragement to his friends.

all these are names that i've been given, either by authority, or by myself, have an indeniable message of pride, honour and strength. always the hero, always the most powerful. one that conquers evil. one meant for great glory. something of great lineage and meant to be treasured. even those names that were given to me out of my personal choice clearly have a similar meaning.

sounds pompous doesn't it? is this who i really think i am? i would never admit it, but perhaps it is already engrained in my own subconscious, and has played a part in developing the person that i am. being a man of God is being a man solely dedicated to Christ and Christ alone, and there is no room for myself. maybe learning the true meaning of all these names can help me realize what i think of myself, and make myself wonder what kind of a person i really am. just a mere child, but giving myself a burden of the names of a king.

how can this be a lesson of humility?

about engineering

sorry i haven't been posting.

about engineering.. i think that this blog post has been long overdue since.. even my high school days (before the blog was created).. and has been more thought of after bily's recent blog post about engineering.

for those who don't know me very well.. most of you probably think that i am a big nerd, and am in love with numbers and equations and how stuff work and technical things like that. so yea.. that's only partly true. yes i do like math a lot, and the sciences aren't so bad either. but i do not know if i can spend the rest of my life with a future seeminly so.. mundane. yes i do believe also that in reality, true life is more about people. belief, faith, philosophy, society, people, thinking and interacting. so yes.. arts courses (yea yea u win, arts ppl).

not to say that there isn't a particular beauty in engineering. i do think that engineering is a very complete branch of study, and the concepts learned can be used anywhere, if u know how. math is a language that i am fairly familiar with (at least up to the level i'm at right now, for the most part). so i mean.. it's not like i totally can't do it either.

though if i base what engineering on my work terms.. then definitely it is not what i want to do with the rest of my life. i suppose it is obvious that coop jobs aren't wonderful.. and i'm sure most of u have heard me talk about it one time or another. but even if i look at the engineers that i work with.. is THAT really what i want to do for the rest of my life? what about my last work term? is THAT what i really want to do for the rest of my life? of course.. i can't base this all on just two measly work terms. but still, i feel that they have spoken out clearly as to what they have to offer.

therefore.. it's up in the air. i said to myself.. i decided on engineering, and switching faculties would backing out on an important choice. but.. could i have made the wrong choice? i have no clue.. haha.. seems neither right nor wrong.

we all joke that the engineers are just gonna end up being pastors anyway. haha. tyndale is just waiting for us.. haha.
